Following the gallery’s presentation of Jeannette Ehlers work at Chart Art Fair in August, Sharp Projects opens a solo exhibition by the artist — The exhibit includes artworks that have been previously displayed at Chart, among others.

The exhibition features photographs and canvas from the performance titled ‘Whip it Good’ that took place in New Orleans (2016) and at The Danish Royal Cast Collection / The West Indian Warehouse (2014). 'Untitled' (2023) is a new work-in-progress that peeks from the corner of the gallery space, with a singular braid made from synthetic hair dipped in ship varnish, reminiscent of a whip. Ehlers' work uses cultural traditions of the African diaspora such as braiding, ritualistic body painting, and performance while referencing the impact of the Slave Trade and colonialism, encompassing both contextual and material aspects. ‘Whip it Good’ was originally commissioned by Art Labour Archives and Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in Berlin, DE for BE.BOP (Black Europe Body Politics) in 2013.

Jeannette Ehlers is a Copenhagen-based artist of Danish and Trinidadian descent whose practice takes shape experimentally across photography, video, installation, sculpture and performance. She graduated from the Royal Danish Arts Academy of Fine Arts (2006). Ehlers is the co-creator of the public sculpture project, I am Queen Mary (2018).

Solo Show

Made-to-measure is a solo exhibition with works by Clara Lena Langenbach. The made-to-measure sculpture series are found objects called Stumme Diener (German) or Stumtjener (Danish), directly translated to silent or mute servant. Stumme Diener are most commonly referred to as a clothes valet or valet stand and are used to properly hang garments in homes, hotels and restaurants. Langenbach’s previous studies in Fashion Design and Fine Arts informed her when fitting and dressing these furniture pieces, transforming their frame-like form into a body.

Two-person show

Excess and Surplus is a two-person show with works by Anna Holtz and Bat-Ami Rivlin. Anna Holtz and Bat-Ami Rivlin use unwanted or presumably unusable materials as their artistic medium. While Holtz uses leftover material to mimic residue, Rivlin decontextualized scavenged or surplus objects. Exhibiting artworks retain the function of wasted containers and matter leftover — often in reference to the body. This exhibition presents recurring notions of discarded, collected, and altered substances while also suggesting their disembodiment. Visually the repeating curvatures that cup and circle seem to hold although there is nothing contained.
